You might plan on going on an intership abroad. 'Plan' in this case means 'intend to'. If you aren't experienced and do not have older sipplings or/and friends and might not been born with the 'german gen' of organisational excellence (this is for my dutch friends ;)) following tips may guide you a bit.
What you should make sure before being thrilled and telling everyone 'I am going to...':
- check out the visa regulations (on time!)
- take out your vaccination booklet and go to the doctors (better: inform yourself); maybe you also want to spend some blood to the doctors so he/she can check your health before/after
- make sure to cancel your cell-phone contract, other doctors-visits, deadlines for uni,...
- get a proper invitation from your company
- check out whether you can get some support from whoever (government,...; BE ON TIME (especially in Germany ;)...jaja, I know, over-organisational skills can be negative sometimes)
- book a flight (at least one month in advance if you want to save money; often you need it for the visa)
- get a (health) insurance (or check whether yours is still valid in that certain country)
- get another bank account or check out where/how to get money at your destination
- check out a place to life (at least for the first week)
- ask potential interns that are at the company before you about tips and tricks
- pack your bags, but pay attention not to pack too much (especially important for girls)
- and of course: organise a proper say-goodbye-party ;)
- ...
I hope, that's a bit helpful and makes you aware of everything you may consider when goin abroad
