Culture? Coolness? Ignorance? Practice? Why is it that Chinese have their cellular phones on maximum volume? Freaky ringtones, Chinese classical music or just ordinary standard tones slowly devastate innocent and delicate acuesthesia - Sufficient reason to sound out this situation of annoyingly loud musical entertainment, especially during working hours.
Several scientific interns set up some interesting theories:
One possible reason could be the fact that the Chinese “shouji” (the lovely Chinese word for cellular phone) is just capable of ringing louder than an average western one. As a conclusion, it can just “accidentally” be set on a somewhat higher volume. Personally, I think this is a somewhat lame excuse and the initial basis of the desire for high-volume-shouji need some serious research.
A further cause could be the basic need of a Chinese to express feelings and attitude with some noise. This can be also found on Beijing streets where honking is an essential tool to survive the jungle of urban traffic. From a Volkswagen-point of view, the extreme usage of honks represents a serious problem – are we going to confront the high-volume-shouji as a comparable problem because it roots in Chinese nature?!
The most credible and widespread opinion about blasting “shouji” is the Chinese expression of personal importance. Whether it is actual importance or pretension, this reasoning shows understandable behavior. Writing this is based on actually happenings. It doesn’t matter who you are, which age, which gender or in which position you hold – turn on your cell on the highest volume as possible! (Not that we have been raised to turn our cells on silent, wherever we go in Europe we are reminded of it...in the movies, cafe, train,...)
Possibly, it shows acceptance and degree of esteem within society. Imagine a Chinese and a German standing on a public place. Surrounded by millions of people. It is relatively silent. Suddendly two “shouji” ring. What happens next?! I guess, from your experience, you can answer this question pretty much yourself.
In the end, it is all about culture, understanding each other and just accepting the fact that we are all different – und das ist gut so!
PS: Have some good ideas or actual knowledge about a solution for this problem, please let me know!

Let's assume that the Asian population inherently is born with a lesser hearing ability than us from the Western front, thus making it necessary for them to crank up the volume of their mobile phones.
I'm enjoying reading your posts!
